What is Your Day Master? The Core of Your Chinese Astrology Chart

May 1, 2026 Huyền Cơ Bazi 3 min read

If you’ve recently generated your BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) chart, you might be overwhelmed by the grid of Chinese characters and elements. However, if there is only one element you should focus on to understand your destiny, it is your Day Master (日主). It is the absolute core of your astrological blueprint.

What Exactly is the Day Master?

In BaZi, your birth data is translated into four columns (Year, Month, Day, and Time). Each column consists of a Heavenly Stem (top character) and an Earthly Branch (bottom character). The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is your Day Master.

Unlike Zi Wei Dou Shu, which uses the Life Palace to determine your core self, BaZi uses the Day Master to represent you. It dictates your intrinsic personality, your strengths, your weaknesses, and how you interact with the other elements in your chart.

The 10 Types of Day Masters

Because there are Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and two polarities (Yin and Yang) in the Wu Xing philosophy, there are exactly 10 possible Day Masters:

  • Jia (Yang Wood): Like a sturdy oak tree. Stubborn, reliable, and growth-oriented.
  • Yi (Yin Wood): Like ivy or a flower. Adaptable, networking-savvy, and flexible.
  • Bing (Yang Fire): Like the sun. Generous, warm, transparent, and routine-oriented.
  • Ding (Yin Fire): Like a candle or forge fire. Passionate, illuminating, and detail-oriented.
  • Wu (Yang Earth): Like a mountain. Solid, trustworthy, slow to change, and protective.
  • Ji (Yin Earth): Like soil. Nurturing, resourceful, and capable of fostering growth in others.
  • Geng (Yang Metal): Like raw ore or a sword. Decisive, tough, and values justice and loyalty.
  • Xin (Yin Metal): Like fine jewelry. Elegant, sharp-tongued, values aesthetics, and seeks perfection.
  • Ren (Yang Water): Like an ocean. Powerful, unstoppable, highly intelligent, and restless.
  • Gui (Yin Water): Like morning dew or clouds. Intuitive, empathetic, creative, and elusive.

Strong vs. Weak Day Masters

Once you identify your Day Master, the next step in BaZi is determining its strength. A “Strong” Day Master means you have many elements in your chart that support you (e.g., Water and Wood supporting a Wood Day Master). A “Weak” Day Master means the other elements in your chart are draining or attacking you.

Important Note: Being a “Weak” Day Master does NOT mean you are physically or mentally weak. It simply dictates which elements are favorable to you. Weak Day Masters need supportive elements, while Strong Day Masters need elements that drain or control them to maintain balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my Day Master change?

No, your Day Master is locked in at the moment of your birth. However, the influence of the elements around you will change as you move through different 10-year Luck Pillars and annual cycles.

Which Day Master is the luckiest?

There is no “best” or “luckiest” Day Master. Every Day Master has millionaires, leaders, and artists associated with it. Success depends entirely on the overall balance of your chart and how you utilize your favorable elements.
