How to Calculate Your Personal Kua Number for Optimal Desk Placement

If you spend 8 hours a day working at a desk, the energetic alignment of that workspace has a profound impact on your career success, focus, and wealth accumulation. In classical Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) Feng Shui, this alignment is calculated using your Personal Kua Number.

What is a Kua Number?

A Kua (or Gua) Number is derived from your birth year and biological sex based on the I Ching (Book of Changes) and the Lo Shu Square. It divides humanity into two energetic groups: the East Group and the West Group. Each group has four auspicious compass directions and four inauspicious directions.

Just as BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) helps you identify your internal favorable elements, your Kua number helps you identify your favorable external spatial directions.

How to Calculate Your Kua Number

The calculation is based on your Chinese lunar birth year. (If you were born before February 4th, you belong to the previous solar year).

  • For Males: Add the last two digits of your birth year. If it’s a two-digit number, add them together to get a single digit. Subtract that digit from 10 (or 9 if born after 2000).
  • For Females: Add the last two digits of your birth year down to a single digit. Add 5 to that digit (or 6 if born after 2000). If the result is two digits, add them to get a single digit.

Note: A Kua number of 5 becomes 2 for males and 8 for females.

Optimal Desk Placement Strategies

Once you know your Kua number, you can position your desk so that you are facing your “Sheng Qi” (Success/Wealth) or “Fu Wei” (Personal Growth) direction while working.

  • East Group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9): Your best facing directions are North, South, East, and Southeast.
  • West Group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8): Your best facing directions are West, Northwest, Southwest, and Northeast.

Combine this directional facing with good Period 9 Feng Shui principles, such as ensuring a solid wall behind your back (the “Black Turtle” support) and an open space in front of you (the “Red Phoenix” vision).

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my office layout doesn’t allow me to face my best direction?

If you cannot face your Sheng Qi (Success) direction, try facing your secondary auspicious directions like Tian Yi (Health) or Yan Nian (Relationships). If none are possible, prioritize having a solid wall behind you rather than facing a good direction but having your back exposed to a door.

Is my Kua number the same as my BaZi Day Master?

No. Your Day Master is calculated from your birth day and defines your personality and elemental balance. Your Kua number is calculated from your birth year and dictates your physical spatial alignment.
